Once a job opens up, you might imagine the perfect candidate waltzing past reception and straight into your office ready to go – a superhuman shipper rep or salesperson ready to perform at 150% from the get go. Well, I hate to break it to you, but you won’t find your superhuman by sitting around and waiting. Never fear! There’s good news as well! If you put effort into creating a stellar recruitment process, you may just catch a great candidate and reel him in.
Below are our 6 best practices for attracting top talent.
1. An organized process
An organized hiring process is key to impressing your top candidate. The more organized you come across, the more your candidates will be sold on the idea of working for you. Have a clear Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 process that puts the candidate through a series of steps to getting hired.
2. Experienced recruiters
Going along with the previous post, having experienced recruiters is invaluable to finding talent. An experienced recruiter will be able to organize the process and know where to find the best talent. However, recruiters can’t do it alone. They will need help from the managers who need to fill the position, which brings us to point 3.
3. Hiring managers
There are times when hiring managers will give HR the candidate specifications and then expect a miracle. Hiring managers and HR need to communicate with each other in order to understand the timeline and specific requirements for the position. Additionally, HR should be realistic with the hiring manager about the timeline and how long the process will take.
4. Referral programs
I’m sure your team is already pretty great, right? That means your pretty great team has pretty great connections. Ask your team if they know anyone looking for work. Chances are, the referrals you receive will turn into talented employees who will stay at your company longer.
5. Candidate pools
A good way to stay organized internally is to already have a list of candidates you can call when needed. Keep a pool of vetted candidates on-hand in order to speed up the process and keep a cool head. Knowing the 10 resumes you have are all qualified candidates will keep your stress levels down and help you feel in control of the process.
This may not help directly with sourcing candidates, but assessments are a good way to vet your current pool. Competency tests and personality assessments can help determine if a particular candidate is a good fit.
These are our 6 best practices for recruiting top talent. Of course, there are more strategies out there, but we feel that these practices are essential to the hiring process.
